Is GAP insurance refundable after I pay off my car?

Usually yes. If you paid off, refinanced, or sold a financed car before the loan's scheduled end and no GAP claim was ever paid, the unused portion of your GAP charge is typically refundable. It is almost never refunded automatically — you have to request it in writing from the right party.

How much GAP refund will I get?

Most GAP refunds land in the low hundreds of dollars and shrink the closer you are to the end of the term. We show an estimated range (not a single number) because administrators use different formulas and we don't have your exact contract. The free estimate on this page gives you that range.

Does the refund come to me or my lender?

If your loan is paid in full, the refund is usually paid to you directly. If your loan is still open, it's typically applied to your loan balance by the lender rather than sent to you as cash.

The estimate on this page is free — it tells you honestly if a refund is unlikely before you spend anything, so you only buy the kit when it's worth claiming. The kit is a do-it-yourself toolkit (report + templates), not a service. Because it's an instant digital download, all sales are final.

This policy explains what RefundGPS collects, how we use it, and who we share it with. We keep it simple because the Service is simple: there are no user accounts and no marketing profiles.

What we collect

Your estimate answers — how your loan ended, GAP details, and any optional figures you enter. The free estimate runs in your browser; we receive these answers only if you proceed to checkout.
Your email address — so we can deliver your Kit and send your purchase receipt.
Payment information — handled entirely by Stripe, our payment processor. We never see or store your full card number.

How we use it

To generate your personalized refund report and Kit.
To take payment and send your receipt.
To answer your support messages.

When you check out, your estimate answers are passed to Stripe as order details so we can rebuild your report after payment. We do not run our own database of customer profiles, and we do not sell your data.

Who we share it with

Stripe — to process your payment and store your order. See Stripe’s own privacy policy for how they handle payment data.
We may use standard, privacy-respecting analytics to understand how the site is used in aggregate. We do not use this to identify you personally.

Retention

Order records are kept as long as needed for our financial and tax records, then deleted. You can ask us to delete the personal information we hold about your order at any time.
